Nine Movies For Every Baseball Lover In Mourning
While I’m loving the opportunity to explore every single streaming service in existence, I’m sincerely missing baseball season. I know, there’s a chance it could come back later on, but just in case that’s not good enough, I combed through the major streaming options to find some baseball films to try to hold all of us over until we can participate in a true seventh inning stretch.
So until I get to sing Go Cubs Go at Wrigley when Chicago wins, I’m going to be getting my baseball fix with a few movies I found.
1. Major League II (Netflix)
Okay, sure, it’s not the first Major League, but it’s a continuation, and it has a lot of the same cast. It’s before Charlie Sheen went a bit crazy, and who doesn’t love a story about lovable losers? And this is coming from a Cubs fan. A solid 90s sports movie is always a great way to spend a bit of time.
2. The Natural (Netflix)
It doesn’t get much more classic than this. Robert Redford, an inspirational tale and a story unlike any other. One of the original baseball movies, aka the one I think my dad tried to make me watch when I was younger that I definitely did not appreciate but would be moved to tears by now.
3. The Rookie (Disney+)
This movie stars Dennis Quaid. That should be all you need. He’s both a coach and a player, which is so perfectly Dennis Quaid that you almost don’t need other details. But in case you need more, it’s a based-on-a-true-story kind of flick that will warm your heart.
4. Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns (Prime)
The king of documentaries himself has something for you during this trying time of no new innings to watch, and that’s a comprehensive look into America’s pastime. It may not be the most nail-biting sports movie, but you won’t learn more about the sport than you do with this.
5. The Perfect Game (Prime)
Just like most good sports movies, this one is also based on a true story. A small baseball team in Mexico that is the epitome of underdog manages to shock and stun fans by amazing everyone by winning 13 games in a row and having a perfect game in the Little League World Series.
6. Season of Miracles (Prime)
If you like your baseball with an extra large side of feels, look no further than this movie. It tells the story of a Little League team in the 1970s that features a baseball savant with autism who teaches everyone that there’s more to the sport than just winning or losing.
7. Everyone’s Hero (HBO)
For someone who wants a baseball movie for the whole family, and especially some little ones not able to play this tee ball season, Everyone’s Hero follows a young boy trying his hardest to return the great Babe Ruth’s bat before the most important game of the World Series comes to pass.
8. For The Love of the Game (HBO)
Maybe you’re missing baseball but are more interested in sneaking in a movie that isn’t just the rags-to-riches sports film. No worries - got you covered there too. We got Kelly Preston, we got Kevin Costner, we got seven other actors that will make you go, “wait I know them from something.” We got a story of love.
9. The Battered Bastards of Baseball (Netflix)
You can learn a bit more about the sport you love by checking out this documentary on Netflix. Kurt Russell appears in this story about one of the only ever independent baseball teams and the way it changed the country at the time and how it inspired so many sports fans and players.
What’s your favorite sports film you’ll be putting on repeat to get you through the drought of live games?
