10 Movies I Can't Wait To See In The First Half Of 2020

It’s a new decade, and that new decade is bringing on a whole new crop of movies. It’s a bit of a new era. 2019 saw the end of the main Star Wars saga, a conclusion to more than a decade of Marvel films and more adaptations than you can count. 2020 still has some familiar looking films coming out, but at least in the first six months of this year, there are some exciting movies that are going to be hitting theaters.

With an intense, almost eerie trailer playing in theaters for months, I’m extremely intrigued by this movie that looks like Blake Lively’s Red Sparrow. Granted, she may be more of a vengeful woman than a Russian spy, but first looks - with the overall tone, costume and wig changes and the main character’s attitude - looks like it could almost be a spiritual sequel.

Going to start off by saying that I’m tentatively excited for this. I was a victim of Suicide Squad, a movie that had one of the best trailers I’ve ever seen that turned into one of the worst films. DC seems to be trying to fix how horrible that was by saying, “But, like, what if it was all….women?” And who knows? It may be great. But DC, you’ve burned me before. So we’ll see how it goes.

One of my favorite movies of all time is the Pride & Prejudice adaptation with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, so when I heard there was a new version of Emma coming up this year, I was beyond on board. After seeing the trailer, I’m even more excited for it. The book has an absurd quality to it and is one of Jane Austen’s lightest tales, and it looks like this version may capture that absolutely perfectly.

I’m quickly discovering that I’m a huge Disney fan, but I may not be a huge Disney live-action remake fan. I was incredibly let down by both Lion King and Aladdin releases in 2019 (and didn’t even bother to see the new Dumbo). But I’m thinking this one could be different. They seem to be keeping only the most basic of elements to the story of Mulan and revamping it completely - which could be the secret to an incredible remake.

Promising Young Woman

From the first second of this trailer, I was on the edge of my seat. It personifies the idea of hell hath no fury, and it sure looks like that is the case. A woman who wasn’t believed about a crime in the past - and had her life ruined because of it - takes revenge and justice into her own hands, testing just how nice self-proclaimed nice guys really are.

After years of people clamoring for a stand alone Black Widow film, Marvel has finally decided that it was time to hear the story behind the ex-Russian spy. It takes place after Civil War, giving some backstory and filling in some blanks about the deadly force that is Natasha Romanova and just how she spent some of her time that we didn’t hear much about.

Legally Blonde 3

May 8 (expected)

This release date isn’t completely solid, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly excited about this movie. I came to love the original movie later than other girls of my generation, but now I’m able to appreciate it for the amazing, empowering film that it is. And I, for one, can’t wait to see what Elle Woods is up to these days, and what lessons we can learn from her.

The book may be another one in the string of “next Gone Girl” style novels, but there’s something about this one that makes it a little bit different. There is still the unreliable narrator aspect, but you figure out pretty early on that there is more to the story than we’re hearing. We have to find out details along with the protagonist, but start out a bit wary of whether or not we can always believe what we see.

Wonder Woman 1984

June 5

If you ask me, Wonder Woman was easily the most successful film out of DC Studios since the Dark Knight trilogy. And I’m going into this movie with high hopes that it will live up to its predecessor. The trailer looks fun, flashy and creates so many questions I can’t wait to have answers - such as how the heck is Steve Trevor in this movie too??

In The Heights

June 26

Considering I’m roughly a week out of having seen Cats in theaters, you’d think I’d be a bit suspicious of musicals turned into movies. However, I trust Lin-Manuel Miranda and this trailer looks like a fun, brightly colored tale that will transition much better from the stage to the movie screen.

Any movies between now and June that you’re looking forward to not on my list? Let me know in the comments below!
