Wrap Up: What I Was Watching In September 2019

I have to say - this Regal Unlimited stuff is glorious. It’s Moviepass….that actually works. I’m able to go see so many more movies in theaters, even if I’m not reviewing them. And it’s pretty amazing. It opens you up to see movies you normally wouldn’t, because there’s no risk besides wasting your time for a couple of hours. So a few more of my movies on this list are from the cinema than normal - and I can’t wait to continue the trend through award movie season.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
In theaters

I’m a sucker for a self-aware action movie. They know they’re insane and just decide to lean into it - and Hobbs & Shaw didn’t hold back. They take every trope, amp it up to eleven and grin the entire time doing it. It’s safe to say I’ll keep seeing these movies as long as they keep putting them out.
The Verdict: 3.5/5

The Goldfinch
In theaters

I wanted this to be amazing. I so desperately did. I read the book first, and I think that’s the only reason I didn’t hate this adaptation. I needed to fill in the gaps that the movie left with my knowledge from the novel. Unfortunately, this one fell impressively short, despite having a solid story to go off of.
The Verdict: 2.5/5

Ad Astra
In theaters

Visually, this movie is stunning. And terrifying. Because every space movie needs to scare the living daylights out of you, it’s just the law. It was a decent watch and entertaining enough, but it was entirely too predictable, and had about 200% unnecessary voiceovers that just dragged on a bit too long.
The Verdict: 3/5

Despicable Me 3
Netflix

Easily the least fun of the three movies within this franchise - and surprisingly, there are not enough minions. Maybe it was for fear of overloading the world with minions since they had their own movie, but it just didn’t have the same endearing quality to me as the others - especially the first.
The Verdict: 3/5

Julie & Julia
Netflix

I was wildly impressed by this movie. It was always on my Netflix queue but I never got around to it. I wish I had earlier! It’s a very sweet, very endearing movie. The Julia Child voice is a bit much, but accurate, so it’s easy to get past. It’s just a very fun, lighthearted movie that is unlike any other movie I’ve seen.
The Verdict: 4/5

She’s Out Of My League
Netflix

I knew nothing about this movie other than it was leaving Netflix soon and I had put on my queue at some point. It was alternating not great and halfway decent. I think I confused the title with She’s All That when I added it. But it was fine - worth the time it took up, but I wouldn’t spend money on it.
The Verdict: 2.5/5

A lot of my future movie watching is definitely going to be in the theaters, but since fall tv season is starting, I won’t be binging as many other shows so I’ll have more reason to just put on a movie when I’m at home rather than just press through one more episode of Breaking Bad.
