Wrap Up: What I Was Watching In May 2019
Blockbuster season is in full swing, and I’m still stuck on how much I loved movies like Rocketman and Long Shot more so than some of the non-Avengers action flicks that have been floating around. Big releases are always fun, but I’m always trying to lighten things up with a romcom here and a missed classic there. This month is no exception.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
Netflix
I’m a sucker for some good true crime stuff, and this is no exception. Sure some of it is a bit fictionalized, but Zac Efron kills it as Bundy. It’s an interesting take on one of the most popular and well-known cases in American history that still manages to make it seem new, fresh and interesting.
The Verdict: 4/5
Ocean’s Eight
HBO Now
I missed this one when it came out in theaters (thanks, MoviePass), and I’m so bummed I did. Finding it on HBO seemed like a blessing in disguise and it was a joy to watch. It may not rate as my favorite of the Ocean’s films (the first Clooney one, of course), but it’s probably second in line - and truly just as fun as the the best of them.
The Verdict: 4/5
Pretty In Pink
Netflix
Alright, it’s time I admit that John Hughes movies are not for me. It’s upsetting because of how much I Love romantic comedies. This one, though, just didn’t do it for me. I had so many issues with it that I couldn’t even really enjoy Molly Ringwald, which is such a bummer. I’m really glad I was able to cross this one off the list.
The Verdict: 2/5
The Last Summer
Netflix
Confession: I was on board for this one the second I saw Wrigley Field and a fictional Cubs player as a love interest. Thankfully, I wasn’t steered wrong, and this was yet another really solid Netflix teen romcom. It was such an enjoyable watch and I hope this trend doesn’t stop anytime soon.
The Verdict: 3.5/5
Serenity
Netflix
So I binged all of Firefly in order to watch the movie before it left Netflix, and I’m so glad I did. I didn’t love the movie as much as the show, but it served as a solid finale to a series that got canceled far too soon. I will forever be wishing I got to spend more time with these characters.
The Verdict: 3/5
Always Be My Maybe
Netflix
I can’t say enough wonderful things about this. It may not be the best movie I’ve ever seen, but the more I sit with it, the happier I am that it exists. It has representation, an amazing cameo and a slight twist on the standard romantic comedy plotline. Somehow, Netflix keeps managing to release these without repeating the same story over and over.
The Verdict: 3.5/5
It was a pretty solid month, movie-wise, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else I uncover in June. Any recommendations of what I should check out on streaming?
