Wrap Up: What I Was Watching In June 2019

I feel behind on reviewing a bit so almost everything I watched is going on this list for what I’ve seen this month. Mostly newer things, but decided to include a few throwbacks, hopefully including more of those in the future. More and more awesome movies get put on streaming services monthly and I just can’t keep up with it all.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
In theaters

I wanted to like this. A lot. I actually weirdly loved the most recent King Kong movie and I expected more of the same. Amazing monster footage and crazy fights were what I was hoping for, and I felt let down by that when it came to Godzilla and his buddies. The writing was rough, too, so that didn’t help things.
The Verdict: 2.5/5

Kingsman: The Secret Service
YouTube TV

I had somehow missed this one when it came out originally and I wanted to play catch up and I really enjoyed it. It felt like a pseudo young adult Quentin Tarantino style film with a bit less gore, but there were a few times I had to wince. The ending left a semi-bad taste in my mouth but I’m looking forward to more.
The Verdict: 3.5/5

Dark Phoenix
In theaters

One of my favorite superhero films is definitely X-Men First Class so every time they’ve come out with another in this series, I’ve been excited. This one fell extremely short, but I’m still debating if it’s worse than its predecessor. The acting was the best part, but boy oh boy did the dialogue and plot feel tired.
The Verdict: 2.5/5

The Wedding Date
Amazon Prime

It wouldn’t be me if there wasn’t at least one romcom on the list. I realized afterwards I had somehow seen the last 15 minutes of this movie before without the rest of it, so I was glad to see that the first 4/5 really held up and made for a very fun, if not predictable, movie.
The Verdict: 3/5

Murder Mystery
Netflix

Let me preface this by saying I do not like Adam Sandler. At all. Lately, he bothers me an insane amount. However, the one I do like is Just Go With It, which features Jennifer Aniston so I gave this a try. I was pleasantly surprised! There were twists I didn’t see coming and overall it was funny and enjoyable.
The Verdict: 3/5

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone
The depths of the internet

I watched this one for two reasons: I adore Brett Dalton and a podcast I love was covering this film. Unless you have compelling reasons such as those, I’d probably take a pass. Watch the trailer; you’ll get every single thing you need to know from those minutes and not waste an hour and a half.
The Verdict: 2/5

Clue
Amazon Prime

I’ve wanted to watch this movie for months now. Baby Tim Curry and a movie based on a board game? I’m so in. And it was a blast. The only reason I had to knock it down is that a bunch of things didn’t age super well, but it made me look even more forward to the remake I believe is in the works.
The Verdict: 3/5

Someone Great
Netflix

I had heard mixed reviews about this one and went in without much expectations but it gave me a lot of feelings. I teared up a bit due to one of the most realistic depictions of a break up (and dealing with said break up) that I’d ever seen in a movie. I laughed, I cried and I was all for it.
The Verdict: 3.5/5
