Wrap Up: What I Was Watching In July 2019
Another Netflix month for me! I can never seem to make a dent in my to-watch list, but I try so hard to at least get a few removed from the queue. This month, a few fell impressively short for me, but a few surprise winners came from the streaming service too. I’m debating on tackling a different streaming service each month and trying to conquer a little bit of that specific queue in the future.
Swiped
Netflix
I have enjoyed almost every movie I’ve seen that features Noah Centineo. And here we have my first exception to the rule. This movie was so bad that I couldn’t stop hate-watching because I just couldn’t believe that it kept getting worse. I’ve never wanted to warn people away from a free movie more.
The Verdict: .5/5
Good Sam
Netflix
I hoped this romcom would make up for the last one I had suffered through and it did…a tiny bit. This was still not nearly as good as the majority of the Netflix options when it comes to this genre. The script was cringey for the most part and it seemed as though they were reading off of cue cards just out of shot.
The Verdict: 2/5
Dumplin’
Netflix
Quite a few people recommended this Netflix original to me, but I resisted for a while. However, this was the first movie of the month to truly impress me. I wasn’t quite sure how the ending was going to go and I was pleasantly surprised by dialogue, acting and plot. And lately, that’s enough to make me write a rave.
The Verdict: 4/5
Jane Austen Book Club
Netflix
This movie was the first one in a long time that made me wish it was longer. It was a fun and creative film, but it seemed like each of the mini-plots throughout were not given the time they needed to be fully formed. I had no idea so many now-way-more-famous actors and actresses were in this, just one more surprise.
The Verdict: 3.5/5
Last Night
Netflix
This movie made me weirdly anxious wondering how everything was going to play out. I’m not sure it has the best ending, but it’s a pseudo romantic movie that has takes on a standard plot that I don’t remember seeing before. Keira Knightley is truly lovely in this film, and it was the first time I wasn’t thrown seeing her in a non-period piece.
The Verdict: 3.5/5
Secret Obsession
Netflix
I had heard some insane things about this movie so I watched it with zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Some parts of this Netflix original are not great by any means, but at only an hour and a half, it’s actually fun to watch. Brenda Song is adorable, and it’s a fun enough thriller to watch, but if you haven’t seen the trailer, don’t. It all but gives every single thing away.
The Verdict: 2.5/5
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
In theaters
I really wanted to write a full review about the latest Tarantino movie, but I truly couldn’t decide how I felt about it. It’s been multiple days. I truly don’t know. There’s nothing really wrong with it, but as my boyfriend said after watching, “So wait, what was the point of this movie?” As of now, I still don’t have an answer. But for the nostalgia, solid acting and Margot Robie looking fabulous (and a super cute pit bull), I think it’s worth seeing.
The Verdict: 3.5/5
What streaming service do you find the best movies on? HBO Now seems to have a killer lineup, but Prime and Netflix are pretty close behind for me.
