Wrap Up: What I Was Watching In March 2019

Due to a slightly crazier than usual social life, seeing Captain Marvel twice in theaters and binging a few tv shows, I didn’t get to as many movies as I hoped to in March outside of my reviews. Three of my movies were from the Indiana Jones series, and you can read about my journey through those in this article. So while this one may be a bit shorter, I promise to get back on my game for April.

Alita: Battle Angel
In theaters

I didn’t have many expectations for this film, so I thought it was alright. There were three or so false endings before we finally did actually make it to the credits, but it was an enjoyable enough film. I’m not sure I’d say it’s worth spending money on a theater ticket (if it’s even still playing), but a rental or cable viewing could definitely be worth your time. The heroine is endearing and it’s a fairly standard action/sci-fi/dystopia style flick.
The Verdict: 5.5/10

Saving Mr. Banks
Netflix

This movie truly charmed me. I know it may not have gone into the more gritty side of Walt Disney, but his character in this (played by America’s dad Tom Hanks) seems to all but be a glorified cameo. If you have any love for Emma Thompson, this is definitely worth a viewing, since she kills it completely. You can sense the level of care she brought to the role and it’s so fun to watch her take over the screen - and to go “wait HE is in this?” as you catch first glimpses of the supporting cast.
The Verdict: 7/10

The Truman Show
Netflix

When I saw this movie was leaving Netflix on April 1, I scrambled to watch it. And as a pop culture obsessive (not just movies, but books and a stupid amount of tv), it’s humiliating that I hadn’t seen this until this past month. I loved it. I’m so glad it came out when it did, as now, the plot wouldn’t totally be difficult to believe if it was supposed to be happening in current day. It’s Jim Carrey at his best, in my opinion, and it is a legitimately fascinating and unique concept, one we don’t always get in theaters these days.
The Verdict: 8/10

Colette
Amazon Prime

Confession: I’m slightly obsessed with period pieces. Especially those starring Keira Knightley. And one of my biggest regrets of 2018 is not seeing this one in theaters. Knightley kills it as the title character and it’s a story of a dynamic, strong and fascinating real woman (and author) who doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. If you have any room in your heart for a historical drama, put this one high on your list. It may be my favorite of Knightley’s since her turn as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.
The Verdict: 9/10
