Remakes, Sequels & Finales: The 10 Movies To Watch In The First Half Of 2019

Each year, movies get bigger, more expensive and - hopefully better. Based solely on the first six months of 2019, there’s a lot to be hopeful for when it comes to what will be hitting the theaters.

Here’s my top 10 list for what I’m most looking forward to seeing on the big screen. Let me know if there’s a gem I missed in the comments below.

The Lego Movie: The Second Part

February 8

The first Lego Movie was a shockingly enjoyable movie, in my opinion. I went in not knowing what to expect and came away having “Everything Is Awesome” stuck in my head for three days. Lego Batman was another welcome surprise, so I’m excited to see what this installment has in store.

How To Train Your Dragon 3

Toothless may be one of my favorite animated characters created - because he manages to remind me of every pet I’ve ever met. These movies manage to invoke so many emotions every time I watch them, so to have new adventures of Hiccup and his dragon…it doesn’t get much better.

Wait, what’s that? Our female-fronted Marvel flick? I’m about it. The previews look killer, Brie Larson has already proved herself as a solid all-around actress and not going to lie, the CGI to make Coulson and Fury look younger is intriguing enough to make me already desperate to see it.

The Aftermath

So I have a slight addiction to Keira Knightley in a period movie. With no shame. And this reminds me a lot of Atonement in look so I’m already sold. The chemistry looks solid, and I feel like while I’ve seen a lot of war movies, there aren’t a ton about what comes right after.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette?

Not many dramas stood out to me so far this year, but it seems around three months in, there’s a solid one coming. Based on the little bit I have learned from the synopsis of the book it’s based on and the preview, this one will be a solid comedic drama.

Avengers: End Game

It all comes down to this. A decade of superhero movies all lead to this. I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t one of my most anticipated films of the year. (What can I say? I’m a sucker for Captain America.) I know there’s a lot up in the air with the fate of some characters, so a lot is on the line.

Aladdin

May 24

This Disney reimagining is one I have to see. I can’t decide if I’m excited, nervous or terrified about seeing a live-action Aladdin. I wasn’t super thrilled with the photos that have been released of it, but I enjoyed the recent Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, so who knows?

Confession time: Elton John was one of my first concerts (I was 4-5 years old). So when I found out this was happening, I was hyped immediately. I love his music but know very little about his actual life. I didn’t think 70s-80s musician biopic was going to be a huge genre, but I’m ready to be surprised.

Dark Phoenix

I won’t believe I’m finally seeing this movie till I’m in the theater. I feel like the date kept getting pushed back, and while I’m glad this isn’t right on the heels of End Game, I think this young X-Men series (that started back with First Class) is a solid franchise and I hope Sophie Turner is able to hold this movie up.

Men In Black: International

Tessa Thompson + Chris Hemsworth + killer suits + buddy cop movie = sold. I don’t need much more than that. I barely even needed the preview to get excited. They rocked it out in Ragnarok, and I can’t see why they couldn’t do the same when it’s based on Earth instead.
