Musings On Media: Not Just Movies
There’s a good reason I let this blog go dormant for a while. I was in a season of change and needed to reevaluate a lot of aspects of my life - including how I go about consuming media in all its forms, and what my writing on it would look like. It had become a chore, repetitive and plodding. One of my favorite things - discussing movies - ended up being the item on my to-do list that kept getting pushed back week after week. I didn’t want it to be that way anymore.
Since I last posted, it’s been the busiest six months of my life. I moved in with my now-husband, got married, got promoted, traveled all over the eastern side of the States and took some much needed separation from blogging, social media (to an extent) and writing. I stopped tracking what all I watched.
Now, I get to look at things with a new perspective. I was able to miss going to movies on their opening weekends. I felt ideas come to me more organically than they had in probably two years. I was reminded of the joy that comes from rewatching and rereading some favorites, rather than avoiding it because it felt like a “waste of time” when there were so many new things to explore. I consumed movies and books solely for the sake of wanting to, rather than feeling obligated to.
So while I still think the Millennial Moviegoer title will suit me just fine, I’m going to expand what I write about. I’m known among friends just how many pieces and how wide a range of media I take in, and it’s one of my identifiers I’m most proud of. Why not share more of that, rather than focusing narrowly on movies alone?
I had a lot of fun changing out my monthly “report” on what I watched to more of a superlative list once a quarter - and it’ll give me the opportunity to note any podcasts, shows and books that are bringing me joy (or recommend to avoid).
First and foremost, my love of writing is based in movies, so that’ll be the majority of my focus. But I also have been dying to talk about the adventure I’m going on with one of my best friends working our way through all the Hercule Poirot mysteries that Agatha Christie has to offer. I’m curious to know people’s thoughts on audiobooks - and to share why I struggle with them, despite listening to podcasts roughly half of all my waking hours. I want to explore how different it is watching shows single vs being married and how you factor partners and families into these decisions.
But most of all….it’s Oscar time, baby!
I’ll be back ASAP with my standard “where to watch” list - and we have more than a month to study up and be prepared for the Academy’s decisions. (And we’ll pretend I’m not already FULL of thoughts just glancing at the list of nominees.)
Nothing like a solid crop of award season flicks to get me chomping at the bit to watch and write even more. Let’s go, 2024. Time to see what you got.
